This hands-on, active music-making course is meant to begin a music educator's journey into Orff-Schulwerk.  Through singing, speech, playing of instruments, movement, and creative activities, such as improvisation and composition, course participants will deepen their understanding of the Orff-approach.

Students will:

  • Engage in music-making through voice, barred instruments, recorder, and various untuned percussion instruments.
  • Explore various movement concepts and their connections to music concepts.
  • Identify key pedagogical concepts of the Orff-Schulwerk approach.
  • Explore different ways to engage students in music-making activities through a process-oriented learning structure.
  • Expand one's concept of how to organize the music learning environment to facilitate music and movement at the same time.
  • Identify key resource materials to use within the Orff-inspired classroom.
  • Arrange, compose, and improvise using elemental music and movement concepts.
